After his season-ending ACL injury, the hope was that Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo would be ready for the regular season. While he will play this year, he may not be ready in time for the opener.

CBS Sports, referencing an article from Dime Magazine, says that Rondo is now expected to miss the entire preseason and maybe even part of the regular season. The point guard last played in January and since he suffered only a partial ACL tear, the recovery time wasn’t as great.

After the losses of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and head coach Doc Rivers this offseason, the Celtics’ rebuilding plan could be even more difficult with the absence of Rondo. However, while Boston wants to get their star on the court, there’s really little sense in rushing Rondo back. The Celtics may have aspirations of reaching the playoffs after their disappointing 2013 – even after Garnett and Pierce heading to the Brooklyn Nets. To do that, though, it’s going to be an uphill battle.

At only 27, Rondo is still a player the Celtics can build around and it’s better that he sit out a bit longer so he can get fully healthy.
