Boxing – Morilla’s Sunday Report Card for Dec. 15

Keith Thurman

Jermain Taylor TKO 7 J.C. Candelo, super middleweights

Taylor (32-4-1, 20 KO) had been inactive for 14 months, but lost no time at all in taking this comeback fight to veteran trialhorse Candelo (32-13-4, 21 KO), working behind his solid jab and his terrific boxing skills, softening his opponent with a sustained attack and gaining confidence for bigger challenges ahead. By the fifth round, the stoppage was a foregone conclusion, and it arrived at the very end of the 7th episode when Taylor was raining punches on his defenseless Colombian opponent. Time will tell if the Taylor of old is back, or if he’s just going through the motions against second-tier opposition in a futile attempt to regain his former glories.

The winner goes on to: After a reinvigorating and encouraging victory, look for Taylor to continue his comeback against similar opposition before being sent back into retirement as soon as he tries to step back into championship territory.
